We Only Live Once, Right?
“You only live once,” she sighed, as we walked across the restaurant to find our table. She had reached the pinnacle of success as defined by her annual performance review, net worth, and an accumulation of really cool stuff.
She was itching for something new, something more. I knew we were going to talk about more than work…
Three decades working with senior executives, I have learned to pay attention when someone says “YOLO.”
It is usually delivered with a shrug.
A half-smile.
A laugh that keeps things light.
“You only live once, right?”
It sounds casual.
It rarely is.
In high achievers, that phrase is often code for something else:
-Rationalizing exhaustion.
-Justifying overwork.
-Masking restlessness.
-A quiet drift.
Wisdom has taught me that YOLO is not right, it is wrong.
We only die once. We live every day.
As we spoke over our coffee, it became clear that she was struggling with the question, “what next?”
Specifically, was it time to retire or take on a bigger role somewhere else?
She was clearly exhausted from the effort, the sacrifices, the loneliness. She was feeling the burnout, yet insisting her job was fun, challenging, and doable.
Here is the thing: High performers do not burn out from pressure.
They burn out when the life they built no longer feels like their own.
When achievement no longer feels like enough.
That is where the Third Act comes in. It is not about retirement; it is about rewiring our lives.
It is about authorship, authenticity, and alignment.
Achievement without alignment is erosion; success hollowed out by the clock.
"YOLO chases the moment; alignment builds a life.
Your Third Act is not about slowing down.
It is about choosing — consciously.
If you have started questioning the success you built,
That is not ingratitude.
It is growth.
So, stop counting years.
Start claiming days.
That is the power of the Third Act.
And, when the question gets louder, listen.
It is clarity knocking.
